History of Siurana: traces of the past

Siurana has its roots in the era of Muslim domination in the Iberian Peninsula. During the 12th century, the region was under Moorish control, and Siurana, then known as Siwar al-Ansar, was a strategic fortress. Legend has it that the fall of Siurana was a tragic and romantic event involving the Mora Queen.

The Legend of Queen Mora: A drama of love and loss

According to legend, the Moorish Queen of Siurana, called Abdelazia, was a woman of great beauty and wisdom. During the Christian conquest of the region, her husband, the Muslim leader Ali-Ben-Abeet, died in combat. The Mora Queen, devastated by her loss, was faced with the dilemma of surrendering or throwing herself from the top of the cliffs.

Instead of succumbing to defeat, Queen Mora decided to throw herself into the void, preferring death to living under Christian rule. Legend holds that, as she fell, her dress inflated like a parachute and allowed her to land softly on the bed of the Siurana River. Since then, the place has been known as Salto de la Reina Mora.
